Historians and investigators concur with the idea that it was
the Corpus Christi celebration the very origin of the Enanos
de la Bajada (the Dwarfs of the Bajada)
What is more, it has been demonstrated that they, together with
gigants, were present at the crowning of Elizabeth II in 1833.
However, we had to wait until 1905 to see this ceremony, worldwide
famous and known. And it was thanks to Miguel Salazar Pestana
who conducted and suggested this ceremony. So, the Danza de
los Enanos we can enjoy nowadays, has been taking place for
a century.
The ceremony is split up in two parts. Firstly, the 24 dancers
just organize a kind of slow parade, dressing up as Vikings,
students and so on. Then, they go inside a house and…
in just a couple of seconds the music gets faster and more active,
more amusing. People start to take pictures. And at the door
of the house we can see the dwarfs, sporting their triangular
huts. And the famous and well-known song of Domingo Santos Rodríguez,
composed in 1925, starts to be heard.
The secret of such a transformation from men into dwarfs is
not revealed under no circumstances and, by no reason, by the
dancers. They defend it. In some cases, the participation in
the dance runs in the family, being inherited from parents to
children. Of the 30 dancers, 24 will surely dance and 6 others
just in case any of the other dancers cannot dance. More than
half of them had already danced in previous Bajada de la Virgen.
