El diálogo entre
el Castillo y la Nave
(Dialogue between the Castle and the Ship)
On the Sunday of the so-called Semana
Grande (the week along which major ceremonies of the celebration
are held) thousands of people invade the La Alameda square.
Others prefer staying on the margin of the ravine. All of them
are impatient for a moment they have been waiting for five years:
the grand entrance of the Madonna Las Nieves into Santa Cruz
de La Palma. And it seems that nothing can stop this.
However, suddenly, a warning scream is heard and the silence
is broken. From the castle, where the Madonna flag is, somebody
shouts:
No hay actos de la Bajada en la agenda de Infoisla
Velera Nave, que la mar surcando
a este fuerte te vienes acercando.
No prosigas tu rápido camino
sin decirme tu nombre y tu destino
In other words: the castle forbids the ship to go on whithout
saying its name and destination.
So, this is the Diálogo entre el Castillo y la Nave
(The Dialogue between the Castle and the Ship). Its text, done
by Antonio Rodríguez López, dates from 1880 or
1885 (there is not a general agreement on the year) Bajada de
la Virgen. However, first mentions of this ceremony, closely
connected to Autos de Moros y Cristianos, can be found in the
beginning of the 18th century.
The ship answers the castle by saying that it carries: una
doncella pura de simpática hermosura, that is, a
very beautiful young lady. And when the soldiers recognize the
Madonna, they turn the cannon shots into respectful and welcoming
greetings. And, just after Loa de Recibimiento ( a kind of religious
song to welcome the Madonna), the procession goes on without
further problems. And finally it reaches Parroquia Matriz del
Salvador (El Salvador church, in Plaza de España).
