According to the Spanish Real Academia de la Lengua Española
(the institution in charge of coining new words or controlling
the correct use of the Spanish language), minué, coming
from the French word menuet, is a kind of cortisan
dance between two people.
It was fashionable during the 18th century.
Minué is the most recent performance of the Fiestas Lustrales.
It was in 1945 when it was held for the first time, substituting
a children dance. The author of its lyrics, as well as of its
music was Luis Cobiella Cuevas.
For scarcely thirty minutes, La Palma recovers the luxuriousity
and the elegance of the big European royal houses. However,
the lyrics have got a strong local taste, as it includes the
virtues of the Madonna Las Nieves, praising and laureating them.
In fact, this ceremony is entirely dedicated to the Madonna.
Two dozens of young people, who have competed, dance with Versailles
style in front of the spectators (more or less 4000 according
to the last Bajada de la Virgen). The costumes of the dancers
are done by hand, preserving and respecting the original and
genuine models. And for every Bajada they are done.
